Realism Tattoo in Bali: Portraits, Black and Grey and Colour Realism

Quick answer: Realism tattoos recreate a photo-like image in ink: a portrait, an animal, a statue, a landscape. In Bali they are usually done in black and grey or full colour, and they need enough size, a skilled specialist and careful aftercare in the sun. At Mason’s Ink, several artists specialise in realism, including Magna, Orlando and Dian, and Olive works in smaller micro realism.
What makes a realism tattoo different
Most tattoo styles are built on lines. Realism is built on light and shadow. Instead of outlines, the artist uses soft shading, contrast and texture to make skin, fur, stone or water look real. It is one of the most technical styles in tattooing, so the artist matters more than anything else.
Black and grey or colour?
- Black and grey realism uses shades of black ink. It suits portraits, statues, animals and mythology pieces, and tends to hold its contrast well over time.
- Colour realism uses full colour to recreate things like flowers, animals and landscapes. It can be striking, but colours need extra protection from the sun to stay bright.

- Mythology and statues, such as Poseidon, Zeus, angels and Greek sculptures. See mythology realism.
- Animals, such as lions, wolves, tigers and eagles.
- Nature, such as mountain landscapes, oceans and flowers.
- Balinese realism, such as a realistic Barong mask or temple statue. Read about the meaning of the Barong.
Size, placement and how it ages
Realism needs room. Fine shading and small details blur together over the years if a design is too small, so faces and detailed scenes usually work best at palm size or larger. Flat, larger areas like the forearm, upper arm, thigh, calf and back give the artist space for detail. Your artist will tell you honestly if your idea needs to be bigger to last.
If you love the realistic look but want something small, micro realism is an option. It keeps the subject simple so it stays readable.
How long does a realism tattoo take?
A small piece can be done in one sitting. Larger work, like a half sleeve or a back piece, may need full-day sessions or several appointments. If you are only in Bali for a short time, tell us your dates and we will plan a design that can be finished during your stay.

Price
Realism tattoos are priced per design, not per hour, because size, detail and colour vary so much. Our minimum price is IDR 950,000 per person. Send us your reference and the size you have in mind for a quote, or read our Bali tattoo price guide.
Aftercare in the Bali sun
Soft shading is the first thing the sun fades. While your tattoo heals, keep it out of the sea, pools and direct sun. Once it has healed, use SPF 30 or higher every time it is exposed. Our aftercare guide explains each step.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a portrait tattoo in Bali?
Yes. Our portrait artists tattoo realistic portraits of loved ones, pets and well-known faces. Bring a sharp, well-lit photo, as the quality of the reference affects the result.
How big does a realism tattoo need to be?
It depends on the detail. Faces and detailed scenes usually work best at palm size or larger. Your artist will suggest a size that will stay clear as the tattoo ages.
Is black and grey or colour realism better?
Neither is better. Black and grey suits portraits, statues and mythology pieces and holds contrast well. Colour suits flowers, animals and nature but needs more sun protection to stay bright.
Can a realism tattoo be finished in one day?
Small and medium pieces often can. Larger work may need a full-day session or more than one appointment. Tell us your travel dates and we will plan around them.
