Tattoo Aftercare in Bali: How to Heal New Ink in Heat, Humidity and Rain

Tattoo Aftercare in Bali: How to Heal New Ink in Heat, Humidity and Rain

Oct 12, 2026 | Tattoo Tips

Quick answer: In Bali, look after a new tattoo by washing it gently twice a day with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, then patting it dry. From 48 hours, apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment. Keep it out of pools, the ocean and direct sun. Wear loose, breathable clothing and don’t pick or scratch. The tropics add sweat, humidity and sun, so being consistent matters even more here.

Aftercare is the part of the tattoo you control. Your artist does the work in the chair, but the next few weeks decide how crisp and bright it looks for the rest of your life. In Bali’s climate, a few extra precautions make a big difference, especially in October as the island moves from the dry season towards the wet season.

Why Bali makes aftercare trickier

  • Heat and sweat. Sweat sitting on a healing tattoo can irritate it and trap bacteria.
  • Humidity. Moist air keeps skin damp, which can make scabs soft and gummy if the tattoo is over-moisturised or covered.
  • Strong sun. UV damages healing skin and fades fresh ink fast.
  • Water everywhere. Pools, the ocean and afternoon downpours are all tempting, or unavoidable.
  • Dust and traffic. Scooter rides mean dust, fumes and friction from clothing or bags.

Day-by-day tattoo aftercare

This follows the same stages as our studio’s official aftercare guide.

Day 1–2: The fresh ink stage

  • Leave the wrap on for a few hours, or as long as your artist recommends.
  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don’t rub, and don’t use a shared bath towel.
  • Start applying a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment 48 hours after your tattoo is finished. Don’t use any other product.

Day 3–14: Healing begins

  • Keep washing gently twice a day and applying a thin layer of ointment.
  • Expect some scabbing and peeling. Don’t pick or scratch.
  • Wear clean, breathable clothing to prevent friction.
  • Avoid soaking in pools, hot tubs or the ocean, and avoid direct sun.

Week 2–4: Protecting the colour and detail

  • Your tattoo may still flake. Keep moisturising to stop it drying out.
  • Protect it from sun with clothing, and use sunscreen only once the skin has fully closed.
  • Keep avoiding chlorinated pools and hot tubs.
  • Be patient. Everyone heals at their own pace.

Most tattoos heal on the surface in about 2 to 4 weeks. Deeper layers keep settling for up to 2 to 3 months, so keep moisturising and protecting it from the sun even after it looks healed.

7 Bali-specific aftercare tips

1. Rinse off sweat quickly

After a hot walk or a scooter ride, gently rinse your tattoo with clean water, pat dry and reapply a very thin layer of ointment if needed.

2. Less is more with ointment

In humid weather, a thick layer can suffocate the skin. Apply a thin layer and blot away any excess.

3. Stay in the shade

Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, and keep the tattoo covered with loose fabric when you’re out.

4. Choose breathable clothes

Cotton and linen work best. Avoid tight straps or waistbands rubbing on the tattoo.

5. Watch out for rain and puddles

If you’re caught in an October downpour, rinse the tattoo with clean water afterwards and pat dry. Street runoff isn’t clean.

6. Use clean bedding

Change pillowcases and sheets that touch the tattoo, and sleep in loose clothing so it doesn’t stick to the sheets overnight.

7. Keep hydrated

Bali’s heat dehydrates you quickly, and hydrated skin heals better.

What to avoid while healing

  • Swimming in the ocean, pools or hot tubs (see below)
  • Sunbathing or tanning
  • Scratching, picking or peeling flakes
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Heavy perfumed lotions or random creams
  • Tight clothing over the tattoo

How long after a tattoo can you swim in Bali?

Wait until your tattoo is fully healed on the surface, usually 2 to 4 weeks, before swimming in the ocean, a pool or a hot tub. It’s ready when there’s no more peeling, scabbing or shiny skin. Quick showers are fine from day one.

Soaking a fresh tattoo can let bacteria in, soften scabs so they pull ink out, and dry out the skin with salt or chlorine. If you live in Bali, plan your tattoo for a stretch without surf trips. If you’re visiting, book early in your stay so you can enjoy the water once it’s healed.

Time since tattoo Showers Ocean / pool / hot tub
Day 1–14 Short, lukewarm showers No
Week 2–4 Normal showers Only once fully healed
After 4 weeks Normal Usually fine. Use sunscreen.

Normal healing vs warning signs

Normal: mild redness and swelling for a day or two, some tenderness, light oozing in the first 24 to 48 hours, itching, flaking and peeling.

See a doctor if you notice: redness or swelling that spreads or gets worse after a few days, increasing pain, pus, heat around the area, red streaks, or fever. Don’t wait. Bali has clinics and hospitals that can help.

Aftercare products

Using the right product matters. Our studio offers a natural tattoo balm designed to hydrate and protect tattooed skin while it heals. Ask our team about it after your session. If your artist gives you a specific aftercare product, stick to it. Our policy notes that touch-ups needed because aftercare wasn’t followed may carry a fee.
