How to Choose the Best Tattoo Studio in Bali: 8 Things to Check

How to Choose the Best Tattoo Studio in Bali: 8 Things to Check

Quick answer: The best tattoo studio in Bali for you is the one with an artist who specialises in the style you want, shows healed work in that style, works hygienically and gives you a clear price before you start. Choose the artist first and the studio second. A studio that is great at fine line may not be the right place for a Japanese back piece, and the other way around.

We get asked “which is the best tattoo studio in Bali?” every day. Honestly, there is no single answer. It depends on your style, your budget and what you expect from the experience. Here are the eight things we would check if we were choosing.

1. Start with your style

Decide roughly what you want before you compare studios: fine line, realism, Japanese, blackwork, Balinese, colour, a cover-up. Then look for artists who do that style every day. Most good artists specialise, and their portfolio will show it. Browse our tattoo styles to see examples of each.

2. Look at the artist, not just the shop

A studio is only as good as the artist who tattoos you. Ask who will do your tattoo and look at that person’s work. At Mason’s Ink, 19 independent artists work across our two studios, and we introduce you to the ones whose portfolios fit your idea. As a starting point:

You can see every artist and their styles on our artists page.

3. Ask to see healed work

Fresh tattoos always look sharp in photos. Healed photos, taken months or years later, show how well the lines and shading hold up. This matters most for fine line and small, detailed designs.

4. Check the hygiene

Sealed single-use needles opened in front of you, fresh gloves, covered equipment and a clean work area are the minimum. Our checklist Is it safe to get a tattoo in Bali? covers what to look for.

5. Read recent reviews

Read the newest Google reviews, not just the star rating, and look for photos from real clients. Reviews that mention the artist by name and describe the experience are the most useful. Our Kerobokan studio is rated 5.0 from 3,846 Google reviews.

6. Get a clear price

A good studio gives you a price before you book and explains what it includes. At Mason’s Ink the minimum is IDR 950,000 per person, small fine line designs up to 4×4 cm have package prices, and larger tattoos are priced per design rather than per hour. See our Bali tattoo prices for details.

7. Expect honest advice

The best artists will tell you when a design is too small to age well, when a placement won’t work, or when another style would suit your idea better. If a studio says yes to everything without questions, be careful.

8. Think about location and timing

Choose a studio that is easy to reach from where you are staying, and leave time to heal before swimming. Our two studios are in Kerobokan and Seminyak, close to Canggu, Kuta and Legian, and open every day from 09:00 to 22:00. Walk-ins are welcome when an artist is free, but booking ahead means you get the artist you want.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tattoo studio in Bali?

There is no single best studio for everyone. The best choice is a studio with an artist who specialises in your style, shows healed work, works hygienically and gives you a clear price. Compare portfolios and recent reviews, then message a few studios with your idea and see who gives the most honest advice.

Should I choose the artist or the studio?

The artist. The studio sets the standard for hygiene and service, but the artist decides how your tattoo looks. Pick someone whose portfolio is full of work in your style.

Where are the best tattoo studios in Bali located?

Most professional studios are in the Seminyak, Kerobokan, Canggu and Kuta areas, where most visitors stay. Mason’s Ink has two studios, on Jl. Raya Kerobokan in Kerobokan and on Jl. Raya Basangkasa in Seminyak.

How far ahead should I book a tattoo in Bali?

For a small tattoo, a few days ahead is usually enough, and walk-ins are often possible. For larger or detailed work with a specific artist, book as early as you can. Our guide on how to book a tattoo in Bali explains the steps.
