Is It Safe to Get a Tattoo in Bali? A Practical Checklist

Quick answer: Yes, getting a tattoo in Bali is safe when you choose a professional studio and plan your aftercare around your holiday. The checks are the same anywhere in the world: sealed single-use needles opened in front of you, fresh gloves, covered equipment, a real portfolio and a clear price before you start. Most problems travellers have come from the holiday itself (sun, sea and pools while the tattoo heals), not from the tattoo.
Bali has hundreds of tattoo shops, from professional studios to street stalls. Here is how to tell them apart, how to look after your health, and how to fit a new tattoo into your trip.
What to check before you sit in the chair
A professional studio will be happy for you to look around and ask questions. Before you start, check that:
- Needles and cartridges are sealed and opened in front of you.
- Your artist wears new gloves and changes them if they touch anything outside the work area.
- Machines, cords and bottles are covered with single-use plastic barriers.
- Ink is poured into small single-use caps, not used straight from a shared bottle.
- The work area is clean and wiped down between clients.
- The studio shows real work, ideally healed tattoos, not only stock images.
- You get a clear price before the needle touches your skin.
- They ask your age. Professional studios only tattoo clients aged 18 or older.
If something on this list is missing, it is fine to say no and walk away.
Look after your health before the appointment
- If you have a skin condition, an allergy, a condition that affects healing, or you take blood-thinning medication, talk to your doctor before you book.
- Eat a proper meal beforehand and drink water. Skip alcohol the night before.
- Don’t get tattooed on sunburned, broken or irritated skin. If you burned at the beach, wait until the skin has fully recovered.
- Tell your artist about anything that might matter, even if it seems small.
Plan your tattoo around your trip
The biggest risk in Bali is the holiday. A new tattoo is an open wound for the first days and usually takes two to four weeks to heal on the surface. Until it has healed:
- No swimming in the sea, pools or hot tubs.
- Keep it out of direct sun. Cover it with loose clothing rather than sunscreen while it is still healing.
- Avoid heavy sweating, long hikes in the heat and anything that rubs the tattoo.
That is why many guests get their tattoo near the end of their trip, or plan a few quiet days afterwards. Our guide to tattoo aftercare in Bali goes through the healing process day by day.
What normal healing looks like
For the first few days it is normal to have some redness, mild swelling, a little clear fluid and tenderness. After that the tattoo usually itches and flakes, a bit like a healing sunburn. Don’t scratch or pick at it.
See a doctor if the redness spreads or gets darker, the pain gets worse after the first few days, you see pus, or you get a fever. These are signs of infection and need medical care.
Why the cheapest quote is rarely the safest
Single-use needles, barrier film, quality ink and experienced artists all cost money. A very low price often means corners are cut somewhere. Compare what is included, not just the number. Our Bali tattoo price guide explains what a fair price looks like.
How we work at Mason’s Ink
Mason’s Ink has been tattooing in Bali since 2014. We have two studios a few minutes apart, in Kerobokan and Seminyak, open every day from 09:00 to 22:00. Our studios are clean and professional, we use high-quality inks and equipment, and we only tattoo clients aged 18 or older.
Every tattoo starts with a conversation about your design, size and placement, and you get a clear price before you book. When you leave, your artist explains how to look after your tattoo in Bali’s heat. You are always welcome to ask us about hygiene before your appointment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I swim after getting a tattoo in Bali?
Not until it has healed. Sea water, pools and hot tubs can carry bacteria into a fresh tattoo and fade the ink. Most tattoos need two to four weeks before swimming is safe, so plan your beach days before your appointment.
Is it safe to get a tattoo at the end of my trip?
Yes, and it is often the best plan. You can enjoy the beach first, then look after your tattoo at home. Keep it clean and covered with loose clothing on the flight, and follow your aftercare instructions.
Do I have to be 18 to get a tattoo in Bali?
At Mason’s Ink, yes. We only tattoo clients aged 18 or older.
How can I tell if a Bali tattoo studio is hygienic?
Watch the setup. Needles should come out of sealed packs in front of you, your artist should wear fresh gloves, equipment should be covered, and ink should go into single-use caps. A good studio will answer your questions without hesitation.
